Cheap, Vietnamese Eats on the Chinatown Streets

Restaurant: Viet Food

Vibe: Quick, Vietnamese street food in a close setting

Cost: £9-13 mains

Location: 34-36 Wardour St, London W1D 6QT

Closest Tube: Equidistant from Leicester Square / Covent Garden stations

Grab one of the two alcove window benches for optimum people watching / feeling like you're in a zoo at mealtime.

Now, usually I would be turned off at the sight of a photographs-of-dishes menu to accompany the standard text menu, however, accepting that we were on the edge of Chinatown, in the beating heart of tourist-London, we gave it a chance.

And what a good decision that turned out to be. The service was friendly, the food was tasty and good quality, and the cost was low - £50 including service, for four small dishes, prawn crackers (of course) and two drinks.

The setting itself is quite cute, with closely arranged but separate tables downstairs, and a shared seating area upstairs. I highly recommend jumping into one of the two front alcove window spots - as long as you don't mind being looked at whilst you eat - to sit back and take advantage of the optimum people watching opportunity that sits in front of you.

Much deliciousness on display.

We went for a mixture of small dishes, ranging from between £7 (tofu spring rolls from the Vietnamese Tapas menu) and £13 (grilled king prawns with garlic & mint). Also on display on the image to the left is the Octopus (not the best I've had - could've done with some chunkier pieces - but tasted fine), the chicken wings, and our bucket of prawn crackers - we succumbed to the temptation!

Food was delivered quickly and I was amazed that we even managed to get a spot in here at 7:30pm on a Tuesday evening. Maybe this is the sweet spot when the theatre diners have departed to watch their performance?

All in all, a great meal, and a nice way to spend an hour, taking a break from the hustle and bustle of Chinatown after finishing an evening spin class nearby.

View from outside the restaurant.
